Oppo, Xiaomi Showcase Under Display Camera In Smartphone

All the smartphone makers are on their way to shrinking the bezels and provide the best possible smartphone viewing experience. The biggest hurdle in this path was the front camera. 18:9 display, notches, pop up mechanism, motorized camera module, punch hole camera, etc have been the part of this journey, but still the essence of the full-screen display was missing. The invention by  Oppo and Xiaomi has turned around the smartphone displays forever. Recently, Oppo and Xiaomi showcased under display cameras in smartphones.

Oppo, Xiaomi Showcase Under Display Camera In Smartphone

Oppo displayed its new technology in an anonymous dummy device. Later that day, Xiaomi also displayed theirs under their tech. The technology is at its very initial stage and will improve as time passes.

OPPO’s Under-screen Camera Implementation

In OPPO’s video, a demo device is seen to have no front camera cutout nor a notch. The device is operated first and then the front camera is operated. A photo is clicked to prove the authenticity of the device.

Xiaomi’s Implementation

In the video by Xiaomi, 2  models of Xiaomi Mi 9 are seen, one with a notch and one fully bezel-less. Later the front camera is opened and a model is seen clicking the photo.

According to Xiaomi, they have used a special low reflecting glass which is capable of high transmission. The camera is embedded in the display. It is covered with the special glass. The glass works both as display and the camera lens as required. Xiaomi claims that their implementation will not affect the camera quality and they can even use the better and bigger camera sensor than their teardrop camera modules. The camera will reside under the display, so the camera module would not be visible from outside.

This is a stride forward to elaborate on the user experience in smartphones. I hope this piece of innovation by Xiaomi and Oppo will boost the market and more of such smartphones will be available in the market soon.
