Evolution of Displays in Smartphones

Smartphone displays have always played a crucial role in the smartphone industry. With display being the primary mode of interaction between the smartphone and user, it becomes very important for the manufacturers to increase the standards of displays.
Users now want to have an immersive viewing experience within the same form factor. This now brings in the concept of bezel-less displays. With shrinking bezels and providing more screen in the same space,bezel-less displays have brought about a revolution in the smartphone industry.

Bezel-less displays have various methods of implementation with the passing time. The well-known implementations of bezel-less displays are as follows-

  1. 18:9 Aspect Ratio
  2. Notch Displays
  3. Motorize/Slider/Pop-up Cameras
  4. Secondary Displays
  5. Folding Displays

1.) 18:9 Aspect Ratio Displays

The ideology of bezel-less displays started first with 18:9 aspect ratio phone displays in LG G6 which further continued with Samsung’s S8 and S8 plus and further on more and more manufacturers followed their footsteps. Since then it has been a trend and necessity at the same time for the manufacturers to incorporate their devices with such displays.

2.) Notch Displays

This implementation of bezel-less displays is the most popular by far. The first popular notch display smartphone was made by none other than Apple in their iPhone X(although Essential brought it first. Since then, every brand has followed Apple’s footsteps. The notches too are of different kinds like wide notches(iPhone X, pixel 3 etc), narrow notches(almost every notch phone nowadays), water droplet notch(Vivo v11, Oneplus 6T, Realme 2 pro etc), V-shaped notches and many more.

3.) Motorized Camera Module

The bezel-less displays took a huge step with the introduction of camera modules which no longer occupied screen space. The introduction to such way was brought up first by Vivo with Vivo Apex with a pop-up camera giving a full screen with no disruption of notches any more. The came Oppo with motorized camera module in Oppo Find X and further Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 with the slider camera module. Such phones were a bit delicate but brought up the best possible viewing experience to viewers.

4.) Secondary Display

To deal with the problem of low durability of motorized camera modules, manufacturers came up with an idea of secondary displays at the back of phones and remove camera modules from the front. This was the most innovative step towards the bezel-less displays.
This idea was brought up by ZTE, Axom M, and Meizu Pro7. Further, this implementation is seen in Nubia X, Yotaphone 2 etc.

5.) Folding Displays

The folding phones brought about a revolution in the smartphone industry. The phones are embedded with displays that when folded can be converted from phone to tablet.  The bezel-less displays encouraged the manufacturers to bring about more and more innovation in screens leading up to folding display phones. This idea was first brought out by Royoles in the form of FlexPai. Since then Samsung and other major companies too are up to the same approach.
